Fashion: Messam and Bruce - I Style and she ‘Tweaks’

Effortless, free and classic - with a conspicuous edge.

Simply put, that would be how to best describe I Style, the in-demand clothing line by Jamaican-born and world-renowned designer Antoinette Messam.

This Sunday, her exquisite collections will be complimented by Tweak Boutique's one-of-a-kind, handmade jewelry, courtesy of designer Caroline Bruce, as the two make their debut collaboration. They’re unique and eclectic pieces will work in tandem on the runway to bedazzle stylish Jamaican women across the island, as their lines will be featured in a traditional Jamaican brunch and fashion show comprising their fabulous collections that will come together to create ensembles with special emphasis on party-wear for the season.

The show is happening at The Jamaica Pegasus in New Kingston from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., and the admission fee is $1,700, plus service charges and taxes. An exclusive one-day sale for all the pieces will follow immediately after the show, where attendees can snag pieces for themselves or find the perfect gift for the holidays.

They both said the collaboration "just made sense" as the two are Jamaican-Canadians with strong ties to the tropical island. Bruce noted: “We both feel our collections are a great compliment to each other. I Style features simple, stylish, timeless pieces with interesting cuts and necklines, and Tweak jewelry fits right in.”

Fashion designer, stylist and costume designer Antoinette Messam.
Their merging began with an unexpected discovery by Messam about her I Style employee. "I noticed a posting on [the employee's] Facebook page with this jewelry line called 'Tweak Boutique' and discovered it was her cousin. I instantly responded, [telling her] that she was holding out on me! I happened to be in Canada, at the time, where Caroline lives, and I contacted her and - voilà- here we are."

As the fashion show that promises to excite kicks off, celebrity models including reigning Miss Jamaica World, Chantal Raymond, and Sunday Herald executive editor and journalist, Christine King, will take charge of the runway. And it’s no mistake that these beautiful women are part of the show; they were key additions to demonstrate that women of all ages, body types and style philosophies can wear the pieces.

The audience will see the many options of how they can wear I Style and Tweak together and the two designers will also give suggestions on how to include the pieces in their pre-existing closets.

Messam, who has worked on projects such as Redemption, starring Jamie Foxx; Jewel, starring Farrah Fawcett; and the 2009 thriller Orphan, explained that the sections in the fashion show are Tropical Colours, Classic Black, Red and Taupe, and lurex pieces for Holiday in Lime and Tangerine, all showcasing apparel made in the light and flexible Jersey fabric.

Bruce will be featuring her Bloom, Fling, Rockstar, Swag and Hooked collections, all selected especially for the show. It should be said that the Bloom collection is sure to be a hit, as it carries distinct statement pieces that bear real orchid flowers neatly preserved in resin.

She said, “I really try to create something unique. Each piece of Tweak is one of a kind and that is important to me. If I have an idea and then see something in a store or magazine that is similar, I rework my design. I don't see the point in reproducing factory-made items.”

The Tweak crafter says she tries to use as much natural material as possible to make her jewelry, ranging from wood to semi-precious stones to shells. And for extra sparkle this Christmas, she's added Chinese crystals to the mix.

“I know Jamaican women have style! After living here for a time, I know that it is often difficult to find something new and unique. So [Antoinette and I] want to bring that here,” said Bruce. “We just want to bring our pieces to a greater audience.”
